A former University of Toledo employment administrator who was fired after writing a column about employment rules for a local publication is suing the university.

Crystal Dixon, former associate vice president for human resources at UT, filed a complaint Monday in U.S. District Court in Toledo alleging violation of her first and fourteenth amendment rights.

Dixon wrote in a newspaper column in April that gay rights can't be compared to civil rights because homosexuality is a choice.

Dixon was fired by the school on May 8.

The university says Dixon's statements damaged her ability to perform her job.

In May, Equality Toledo, the area’s LGBT equal rights organization, insisted Dixon had shown herself to be incapable of following the university's anti-discrimination guidelines.

“Do not be fooled. This was not a matter of ‘free’ speech," an e-mail newsletter from the group reads. "Rather, the question was whether her homophobic views prevented her from fulfilling her job duties and from furthering UT’s values and diversity plan."

Dixon's column was in response to one previously written by editor-in-chief Michael Miller which said Ohio lags in gay rights.

The Thomas More Law Center in Ann Arbor is representing Dixon, Toledo Blade reports.

The lawsuit filed Monday in federal court is seeking that Dixon be reinstated as associate vice president for human resources at Toledo.
