Salt Lake City, which has long been a bright blue beacon within the deep-red politics in
Utah, now has its first-ever out gay city councilman,
Stan Penfold. Voters in the city have previously elected elected three out gay state legislators. Penfold
won in last week’s election to represent the Avenues and Capitol Hill neighborhoods, replacing outgoing Councilman
Eric Jergensen. Penfold, a director of Utah AIDS Foundation, survived a last-minute slam by his opponent,
Phil Carroll, who
claimed in a Trib interview days before the election that Penfold lacks insight because he never has reared a family. “That’s a big difference,” Carroll asserted. Readers cried foul in the paper’s comments section, some calling it a smear tactic. And almost as significant, news of the election can be found on an LGBT-issues blog that’s hosted by the city’s major newspaper and authored by one of
Salt Lake Tribune’s staff writers. The blog, called
LGBT FYI, is written by
Rosemary Winters, who – according to her bio on the sidebar – “has written about small business, global warming, city governments, sexuality and Utah’s involvement in California’s Proposition 8.” It appears to have been launched with little fanfare on Oct. 30.
