Folks noticed quickly when an obscure governor was appointed by GOP candidate John McCain, that his running mate, Sarah Palin, looks a lot like comedian Tina Fey. Fortunately for us all, Ms. Fey returned to Saturday Night Live last night to join Amy Poehler for a great skit.
OutInHollywood blog enthuses, "This was a riot! Tina Fey was perfection and Amy Poeler as Hillary Clinton was a scream." As Bilerico put it, "The comedy gods are happy."
Here's NBC's clip. (which isn't working here, so...)
OutInHollywood blog notes the the ABC News Political Radar blog reports that Sarah Palin and her staff caught the performance from the air:
ABC News' David Wright and Alyssa Litoff Report: As comedienne Tina Fey debuted her impression of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live, the governor and her staff were watching from 30,000 feet.
Palin was on board her campaign jet flying from Reno to Denver as 11:30 PM Eastern rolled around. But the show was available on the Jetblue charter's satellite TV system. ...
There were howls of laughter from the sizeable press corps covering Palin's first foray on the campaign trail without her running man as a chaperone.
But, from the front of the plane, silence. The flight attendants assured us Palin and her entourage were watching. What she thought, though, is anybody's guess.
AfterElton notices that the skit is getting rave reviews not just from them, but also from the mainstream press:
The whole thing was so funny, Lori and I watched it three times last night. (Not so funny? The rest of the show.)
The press is eating up the skit, too. The Chicago Tribune is asking, "Did Tina Fey out-Palin Palin?" The TV critic at the Orlando Sentinel says, "Michael Phelps was the host, but Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the stars."
Although it's not at all clear how Palin comes by her northern-plains accent, Tina Fey does a superb job in the skit of emphasizing it just enough to highlight the Fargo-like absurdity in it all.
