Twelve men who returned recently from full-time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints agreed to pose shirtless for the third annual “Men on a Mission” calendar that is now available in its 2010 edition.

Chad Hardy, the creator of the calendar that first appeared in 2007, insists that it’s about more than just eyecandy. He claims it aims at “building a dialogue that encourages people across every belief system and walk of life to defy stereotypes, step out of judgment and embrace tolerance over fear.”

Eyecandy: Mormon missionary hunks pose for calendar, third edition [contd.]

In a FAQ, at the website for Mormons Exposed, Hardy (who was excommunicated by the church after he published the first calendar) explains that the men who pose remain Mormons, despite the controversy generated by the calendar project.

The fact that twelve young Mormons posing shirtless has certainly raised eyebrows, it has also helped sort out some common misconceptions about Mormons. The shock value of what these traditionally conservative young men has done is a powerful progressive step in building a dialogue that encourages people across every belief system and walk of life to defy stereotypes, step out of judgment and embrace tolerance.

OK. Fine. But the eyecandy is still worth a look.
