Liverpool -- Two teenagers accused of beating 18-year-old hairdresser Michael Causer to death in what police believe was a homophobic attack, were formally charged Thursday with his murder.
Shortly after the attack in Huyton, Merseyside on July 26, James O'Connor, and Gavin Alker, both 19, were charged with grievous bodily harm with intent. But when Causer died, they faced upgraded charges
Paramedics reportedly found Causer lying in a pool of blood. His attackers had kicked him or perhaps even stamped on his head -- a tactic often used because of the low sentences which can be handed out for such attacks, according to a columnist for Liverpool Times.
He died in Walton neurology center in August, eight days after the attack.
Gavin Alker, 19, and James O’Connor, 19, denied the charge of murder at Liverpool crown court Thursday, Liverpool Echo reports.
Michael Binstead, 18, has been charged with perverting the course of justice, according to the Echo. Christopher Douglas, 19, of Huyton, has been charged with witness intimidation in connection with the attack, according to the Guardian.
Family and friends of the victim were in court room Thursday as a trial date of January 26 was set by the Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe, according to the Echo.
Causer's brutal death has galvanized the community which sees it as a symptom of dangerous homophobia.
Last week, Liverpool's mayor captained a gay football team yesterday in a match against police officers in memory of Causer, Liverpool Daily Post reports.
Steve Rotheram led Mersey Marauders FC, a team made up of gay men and members of Michael’s family, including his two brothers.
On the sideline, Michael’s parents, Marie and Michael Sr, joined a crowd of 50.
Mrs Causer said, "It's about time we had this match, it’s a really good idea and Michael would have loved it.
"He wasn't a massive football fan but he supported Liverpool and we’re so proud of his two brothers for playing."
The event was organized by Paul Amann who chairs Mersey Marauders FC which is aimed at gay and gay-friendly football fans, according to the Post.
Rotheram said: “I really wanted to be part of this event, just to signal my total opposition to homophobia.
“I find the idea that someone could be killed because of their sexuality totally abhorrent.”
Chief Constable Hogan-Howe, said, "It’s terrible that Michael died in the way he did.
"We are talking to the gay community and taking things worrying them seriously. I hope today provides confidence and shows we are building relationships and working together."
Liverpool’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGB&T) Network have launched a fundraising appeal to help Michael’s family. Anyone wanting to donate should visit www.lcvs.org.uk and look for the Michael Causer Fund section.
